The Story Behind Our Wines

In 1847 the Menzel Family was amongst a small group of pioneers who settled in Lyndoch. The Menzels, being the first to occupy God's Hill, worked the land to raise their family. Amongst their mixed farming they planted the first vines on the eastern side of their farm where our current vineyard is situated. To honour this great family we have revived that vision and as a result named our premium label Menzel.

Permanent Arm is a style we used to establish our Cabernet Sauvignon vineyard and involved wrapping two canes onto the trellis wire, one either side of the vine trunk. Each winter we prune back the last season's wood to the permanent arm ready for the next season. Each year, God's Hill vineyard produces wines of excellent quality, mainly due to the expertise of the Vigneron in keeping the vineyard in balance. Constant care in shaping the canopy and removing excess fruit after veriason has allowed the wines to ripen the fruit to their optimum.

Our Merlot runs from row 1 to row 29, which sits on the bottom end of our vineyard, and in the centre of this block we have a number of gum trees. In particular there is an old Black Olive tree, which each year yields an excellent extra virgin oil with a beautiful aroma and soft texture. Because of this unique situation we feel it's appropriate to name our unique style of Merlot, Black Olive.

When asked to plant only red varietals, we couldn't imagine not having a white variety also in our vineyard. Our first choice was Chardonnay because it produces great wines and has a following by many who prefer, as we do, a fresh, fruity and light wine. Inspired by our passion for this wine, we purchased a quantity of Chardonnay vines, which we subsequently planed at the bottom of our vineyard resulting in filling three rows, hence the name III Rows.

The Selvaggio 2009 Wild Ferment Chardonnay is the creation of Charlie Scalzi and Peter Gajewski, deriving from our 2008 III Rows Chardonnay. The idea of using the Chardonnay to make two barrels in oak quickly prompted Peter to suggest a wild ferment, that is, not adding any cultured yeast. The nod was given to this common family tradition.

The 2006 vintage started with careful selection of our fruit and picking at the winemakers preferred flavours. Ferment took place in open fermenters at controlled temperature for six days. The wine was placed in a combination of both French and American oak hogsheads, with 10% new oak for maturing. After 20 month in oak we tasted 43 barrels selecting the best barrel of each variety to create this Reserve. In the lab we carefully blended different percentages of variety before selecting what our winemaker Charlie considered to be the optimum and the family giving the nod. The blend is 75% Shiraz 15% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Merlot.

"The Orphan" only 4 barrels was created from grapes off a dry grown vineyard with very low yield (1/2 ton per acre) and intense flavours. The vineyard has been removed to make way for new development. After gentle crush of the grapes and controlled fermentation it was put in 3 year old French and American oak to mature for 36 month before bottling.
